Xolo Cantillo is a Colombian contemporary visual artist known for his use of unconventional techniques and materials that transport audiences into avant-garde contexts. His work embodies the raw energy and rapid pace of New York City, which forms the core of his artistic vision.
In his work, Xolo Cantillo presents a rough, raw, effervescent, and fast-paced portrayal of New York City, which forms the fundamental elements of his artistic vision. From a migratory perspective, he uses mixed media to encapsulate his experiences, facetiously engaging with the paradox of a capitalist society saturated with both individual and collective desires, inviting the audience to become part of them.
Color plays a crucial role in each of his pieces, reflecting the energetic resonance of the moment. Florentine tones, along with a palette of grays, blacks, and silvers (acrylics), are intricately intertwined with disruptive wax pencil lines, creating a dissonant yet balanced effect.
In terms of materials, Cantillo utilizes transparent synthetic plastic vinyl as his canvas. The transparency of this material allows for endless nuances through projected shadows and 3D effects. Additionally, the intentional use of crossbars as part of the composition harmonizes with the chosen color scheme, enhancing the mechanical, avant-garde quality of the work.
Balance, unconventional materials, sarcasm, sensuality, and depictions of present-day moments are key elements that define this project.
